Per secoli i vampiri sono rimasti avvolti nelle tenebre, costretti a nascondersi dalla luce del sole. Per questo hanno scelto come terreno di caccia la remota e isolata cittadina di Barrow, in Alaska, che ogni inverno resta avvolta nelle tenebre per trenta giorni. Spetterà allo sceriffo Eben e ad un gruppo sempre più sparuto di sopravvissuti fare tutto il possibile per sopravvivere fino al sorgere del sole.
