Anni '80. La Borsa americana é in pieno boom, ma Matt Franklin, giovane laureato del MIT ed occupato in un laboratorio con una lauta retribuzione, scandalizzato dal materialismo imperante, decide di licenziarsi ed accettare un posto presso un'attività di videonoleggio.
