In un futuro fin troppo prossimo, il riscaldamento globale ha causato la separazione tra le atmosfere, la cui frizione scatena violenti tornado e terrificanti tempeste elettriche. Uno di questi vortici si è focalizzato su Manhattan, scavando un sentiero di devastazione che sta per seppellire New York sotto una spessa coltre di ghiaccio. Il deputato James Lawrence e sua moglie Cassie, mentre cercano un modo per risolvere la propria crisi matrimoniale, scoprono anche come calmare la tempesta. Avranno però solo ventiquattr'ore per salvare la città, prima che sia cancellata.
