Alithea Binn è un'accademica che vive da sola e ha dedicato gran parte della sua vita agli studi di storia e mitologia. Mentre si trova a Istanbul per una conferenza, compra un'ampolla in un negozio di oggetti antichi. E, quando si trova nel bagno dell'hotel dove alloggia, esce improvvisamente un genio, chiuso lì dentro da oltre 2500 anni che le offre la possibilità di esaudire tre desideri in cambio della sua libertà. La donna inizialmente è scettica ma poi si fa gradualmente conquistare dalle sue fantastiche storie del passato.
