Ron Howard ricostruisce la figura pubblica e la vita privata del cantante d'opera Luciano Pavaraotti grazie all'ausilio dell'archivio della famiglia, di filmati inediti e materiale esclusivo, mettendo in luce come il tenore italiano, che ha venduto qualcosa come 100 milioni di dischi in tutto il mondo, contribuì grandemente ad avvicinare la lirica, arte ottocentesca, al pop. Generoso, nel fisico, nello spettacolo, nella beneficenza, ha fatto conoscere l'opera alle masse, ha portato sullo stesso palco la lirica e il pop. Per la prima volta con la piena collaborazione della famiglia, che fino a questo momento non aveva mai acconsentito a farsi intervistare lungamente, un ritratto che è a tutti gli effetti quello di un grande interprete, un attore della scena, capace di emozionare come le star del cinema, quando sono tutt'uno col ruolo.
