Durante un soggiorno a Londra con la figlia, il chirurgo di colore Mat Younger, vedovo, conosce in circostanze misteriose la giovane Katherine, nipote dell'ambasciatore di uno stato africano. I due si frequentano e Mat si innamora di lei che tuttavia sembra voler eludere le sue attenzioni. In realtà Katherine cerca di nascondergli un segreto che cambierà per sempre il corso del loro destino...
