Mike Deerfield scompare misteriosamente subito dopo essere ritornato dall’Iraq, dove ha combattuto, e viene considerato “assente ingiustificato” dall’esercito. Quando la sconvolgente notizia raggiunge Hank Deerfield, ex soldato della polizia militare, e sua moglie Joan, Hank decide di mettersi alla ricerca del figlio, con l’aiuto della riluttante investigatrice di polizia Emily Sanders, che ha la giurisdizione dell’area in cui Mike è stato visto per l’ultima volta. Man mano che le indagini proseguono e il quadro si compone, Emily si rende conto che la scomparsa è solo una montatura. In guerra con le alte sfere militari, Hank e Emily fanno di tutto per mantenere il controllo delle indagini. Ma quando, alla fine, la verità su Mike e su ciò che è accaduto in Iraq emerge, Hank vede il suo mondo in pericolo e deve rimettere in discussione tutte le sue certezze più consolidate per poter risolvere il mistero che sta dietro alla scomparsa del figlio...
