Il seme della follia (1995)
Trent viene ingaggiato dall'editore Harglow per ritrovare Sutter Cane, scrittore di libri horror di successo. Tuttavia Trent è convinto che la presunta scomparsa dello scrittore possa essere una trovata pubblicitaria per lanciare l'uscita del nuovo libro. Prima di partire alla ricerca di Cane, Trent legge i suoi libri (che in qualche modo lo colpiscono) e, ricomponendo le relative copertine, scopre che Cane dovrebbe trovarsi in una remota cittadina del New England, Hobb's End, che si credeva essere solo un luogo di finzione dei suoi romanzi. Trent e l'assistente di Harglow raggiungono Hobb's End, dove la finzione e la realtà diventano difficili da distinguere: accadono eventi soprannaturali, probabilmente dovuti alla lettura di uno dei libri di Sutter Cane, che porteranno l'investigatore ad uno stato di pazzia incontrollabile.
