Nel 1719, in attesa che Luigi XV cresca, Filippo d'Orléans è reggente di Francia. È un liberale riformista senza illusioni che detiene il potere e non vuole esercitarlo, dedito ai piaceri della vita; gli altri due personaggi principali sono l'ambizioso abate Dubois e il donchisciottesco marchese di Pontcallec.
