Dopo i capovolgimenti degli episodi precedenti - dall'abbandono della palude alle blasonate nozze con la principessa Fiona - l'orco verde dalle orecchie a forma di trombetta, torna nel più politicamente scorretto dei cartoon per assicurare un degno successore al regno di Molto Molto Lontano. In una Hollywood rovesciata a immagine e somiglianza del mondo delle favole, il povero Re Harold, suocero ranocchio di Shrek e padre di Fiona, viene a mancare improvvisamente alla corte dei suoi cari. L'unico erede al trono, dopo il rifiuto incondizionato di Shrek, sembra essere un ingenuo sbarbatello che risponde al nome di Arthur. Insieme al nobile Gatto con gli stivali e al logorroico Ciuchino, i tre eroi partono per una nuova avventura, proprio mentre il Principe Azzurro - stanco ormai di recitare in una platea indegna della sua bellezza - è pronto a meditar vendetta per riprendersi, insieme ai cattivi di tutti i tempi, il regno perduto.
