Perry sta facendo causa a un giornale spazzatura che sta pubblicando una storia su una storia d'amore tra lui e Della. L'editore ha anche file "sporchi" su un generale dell'esercito, il suo banchiere e altri "clienti". Tutti gli lanciano minacce verbali poco nascoste durante una festa, ma la persona che lo odiava di più è una giornalista donna che l'editore aveva appena licenziato dal giornale per aver tentato di scrivere una storia seria. Lei lo minaccia e subito dopo viene trovato l'editore, che galleggia nella sua piscina, colpito. Il giornalista viene arrestato per il crimine e Perry, che ha un interesse personale in questa faccenda, con l'aiuto di Della e Paul si propone di risolvere il mistero. Ma gli altri sospettati vogliono solo che il caso finisca e faranno di tutto per proteggere il loro passato e i loro segreti
