Joe Fox e Kathleen Kelly vivono e lavorano a pochi isolati di distanza nell'Upper West Side. I negozi che frequentano sono gli stessi e passeggiano per le stesse strade. Lui è il proprietario della più importante catena di bookstore di Manhattan, le megalibrerie Fox, mentre lei gestisce una piccola libreria per bambini ereditata dalla madre, "Il Negozio Dietro l'Angolo" proprio accanto al bookstore. I due si incontrano in una chat-room, e nasce un'amicizia sebbene anonima. Nella vita reale invece, s'incontrano ad una festa di beneficenza in cui capiscono di non sopportarsi, ma le cose cambiano man mano che iniziano a frequentarsi.
