Michael Jennings è un ingegnere specializzato nell'introdursi in prodotti informatici appena brevettati per rubarne i segreti. È talmente bravo che, per contratto, le ditte che lo assoldano gli cancellano i ricordi di tutto il periodo in cui ha lavorato al progetto. Due mesi di vuoto di memoria sono tutto sommato un piccolo prezzo da pagare per vivere agiatamente. Ma un giorno la posta si fa più alta: lavorare per il vecchio amico Rethrick ad un progetto segretissimo, per tre anni, in cambio di una quantità di denaro irrifiutabile. Buio. Ritroviamo Jennings, privo di ogni ricordo dei passati tre anni, con un conto in banca azzerato, una bella fidanzata di cui non ricorda che uno sguardo, l'FBI che lo bracca e gli uomini di Rethrick che vogliono ucciderlo.
