L'esploratore Allan Quatermain sposa la bella archeologa Jessie, che vorrebbe lasciare l'Africa e tornare negli Stati Uniti. Ma il fratello di Allan è scomparso mentre era sulle tracce di una mitica città dell'oro, e l'archeologo decide di restare per cercarlo. Messo sulla pista giusta da un uomo che verrà poi assassinato, deve affrontare un pericoloso viaggio nel cuore della foresta.
