Anne Bancroft (nata Anna Maria Louisa Italiano; 17 settembre 1931 – 6 giugno 2005) è stata un'attrice statunitense. Rispettata per la sua abilità recitativa e versatilità, Bancroft ha ricevuto un Academy Award, tre BAFTA Awards, due Golden Globe, due Tony Awards, due Primetime Emmy Awards e un Cannes Film Festival Award. È una dei soli 24 attori ad aver ottenuto la Triple Crown of Acting. Bancroft è nata Anna Maria Louisa (o Luisa) Italiano il 17 settembre 1931, nel Bronx, New York City, la metà di tre figlie di Mildred (nata Di Napoli), un'operatrice telefonica, e Michael G. Italiano, un modellista di abiti. Entrambi i cognomi dei suoi genitori erano toponomastici. I suoi genitori erano immigrati italiani dal Sud Italia. In un'intervista, ha dichiarato che la sua famiglia era originaria di Muro Lucano, in provincia di Potenza. È stata allevata nella fede cattolica romana. Bancroft è cresciuto a Little Italy, nel quartiere di Belmont nel Bronx, ha frequentato P.S. 12, trasferendosi poi al 1580 di Zerega Avenue. Il debutto di Bancroft a Broadway nel dramma a due personaggi Two for the Seesaw (1958), le ha portato un ampio riconoscimento per la profondità del suo talento e le è valso un Tony Award come migliore attrice non protagonista. Ha vinto l'Oscar come migliore attrice per la sua interpretazione di Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker (1962), ed è stata nominata per un Oscar come migliore attrice per la sua interpretazione di Mrs. Robinson in Il laureato (1967). Bancroft ha continuato ad avere una carriera di successo nel cinema e in televisione. Ha recitato in una serie di altri film, tra cui The Elephant Man (1980), 84 Charing Cross Road (1987) e Agnes of God (1985), per il quale è stata nominata all'Oscar come migliore attrice.
