Benicio Monserrate Rafael del Toro Sánchez (Santurce, 19 febbraio 1967 è un attore e produttore cinematografico portoricano naturalizzato spagnolo. Ha debuttato sul grande schermo con il film Big Top Pee-wee (1988), ottenendo il riconoscimento internazionale con il film I soliti sospetti (1995). Ha continuato a recitare in Basquiat (1996), Paura e delirio a Las Vegas (1998), e Snatch - Lo strappo (2000). Ha ricevuto l’Oscar al miglior attore non protagonista per la sua interpretazione in Traffic (2000), ricevendo una seconda e terza candidatura agli Oscar nella medesima categoria per i film 21 grammi (2003) e Una battaglia dopo l'altra (2025). Da allora ha recitato in Sin City (2005), Che - L'argentino (2008), Che - Guerriglia (2008), Le belve (2012), Vizio di forma (2014), Sicario (2015) e il suo sequel Soldado (2018) e No Sudden Move (2021). Ha anche assunto ruoli nei franchise Wolfman (2010), con il ruolo de il Collezionista in tre film nel Marvel Cinematic Universe, e Star Wars - Gli ultimi Jedi (2017). Ha recitato nei film Wes Anderson The French Dispatch (2021) e La trama fenicia (2025). In televisione, ha interpretato Richard Matt nella miniserie televisiva Escape at Dannemora (2018), per la quale ha ricevuto una candidatura al Premio Emmy come migliore attore. Nel corso della sua carriera si è aggiudicato un Premio Oscar, un Golden Globe, un Premio BAFTA, due Screen Actors Guild Awards, un Prix d'interprétation masculine al Festival di Cannes e un Orso d'argento per il miglior attore al Festival di Berlino. Nasce a Santurce, a Porto Rico, il 19 febbraio del 1967, da genitori di origini catalane e basche. La madre muore per epatite quando Benicio ha nove anni. All'età di dodici anni si trasferisce con la famiglia in Pennsylvania, dove vive in una fattoria. Durante gli studi alla University of California a San Diego, dove segue un corso di economia, del Toro si iscrive ad un corso di recitazione, che presto lo cattura. Appare in un certo numero di produzioni studentesche, una delle quali lo porta al Festival di Arti Drammatiche al Lafayette Theatre di New York, dove decide di trasferirsi dalla Pennsylvania per studiare recitazione alla Square Acting School. Vince una borsa di studio per lo Stella Adler Conservatory e poi si trasferisce a Los Angeles per studiare all'Actor's Circle Theatre grazie al quale ottiene i primi ruoli in serie televisive.
