Marlon Brando Jr. è stato un attore americano. Considerato uno degli attori più influenti del 20° secolo, ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti nel corso della sua carriera che ha attraversato sei decenni, tra cui due Academy Awards, due Golden Globe Awards e tre British Academy Film Awards. Brando è stato anche un attivista per molte cause, in particolare il movimento per i diritti civili e vari movimenti dei nativi americani. Avendo studiato con Stella Adler negli anni '40, è accreditato di essere uno dei primi attori a portare il sistema di recitazione e il metodo di recitazione Stanislavskij, derivati dal sistema Stanislavskij, al pubblico mainstream. Inizialmente ha ottenuto il plauso e la sua prima nomination all'Oscar come miglior attore protagonista per aver ripreso il ruolo di Stanley Kowalski nell'adattamento cinematografico del 1951 dell'opera teatrale di Tennessee Williams Un tram che si chiama desiderio, un ruolo che ha interpretato con successo a Broadway. Brando ha ricevuto una nomination all'Oscar per aver interpretato Emiliano Zapata in Viva Zapata! (1952); Mark Antony nell'adattamento cinematografico di Joseph L. Mankiewicz del 1953 del Giulio Cesare di Shakespeare; e il maggiore dell'aeronautica Lloyd Gruver in Sayonara (1957), un adattamento del romanzo di James A. Michener del 1954. Gli anni '60 videro la carriera di Brando subire una flessione commerciale e critica. Ha diretto e interpretato il western cult One-Eyed Jacks, un flop di critica e commerciale, dopo il quale ha consegnato una serie di notevoli fallimenti al botteghino, a partire da Gli ammutinati del Bounty (1962). Dopo dieci anni di successi, accettò di fare un provino nel ruolo di Vito Corleone ne Il padrino (1972) di Francis Ford Coppola. Ha ottenuto la parte e successivamente ha vinto il suo secondo Oscar e Golden Globe in una performance che i critici considerano tra le sue più grandi. Ha rifiutato l'Oscar a causa di presunti maltrattamenti e interpretazioni errate dei nativi americani da parte di Hollywood. Il Padrino è stato uno dei film di maggior successo commerciale di tutti i tempi e, insieme alla sua interpretazione nominata all'Oscar in Ultimo tango a Parigi (1972), Brando si è ristabilito tra le fila delle migliori star del botteghino. Dopo una pausa nei primi anni '70, Brando si accontentò di essere un attore caratterista ben pagato in ruoli secondari, come Jor-El in Superman (1978), come il colonnello Kurtz in Apocalypse Now (1979) e Adam Steiffel in The Formula (1980), prima di prendersi una pausa di nove anni dal cinema. Secondo il Guinness dei primati, Brando è stato pagato la cifra record di 3,7 milioni di dollari (16 milioni di dollari al netto dell'inflazione) e l'11,75% dei profitti lordi per 13 giorni di lavoro su Superman.
