Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins CBE (nato il 31 dicembre 1937) è un attore, regista e produttore cinematografico gallese. Ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti, tra cui due Academy Awards, quattro British Academy Film Awards, due Primetime Emmy Awards e un British Academy Television Award. Ha inoltre ricevuto un Golden Globe onorario e la borsa BAFTA dalla British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Nel 1993 fu insignito del titolo di cavaliere dalla regina Elisabetta II per i suoi servizi alle arti e nel 2003 ricevette una stella sulla Hollywood Walk of Fame per i suoi risultati nell'industria cinematografica. Dopo essersi laureato al Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama nel 1957, Hopkins si formò alla Royal Academy of Dramatic Art di Londra, e fu poi notato da Laurence Olivier, che lo invitò a unirsi al Royal National Theatre nel 1965. Le produzioni al National includevano King Lear, la sua opera shakespeariana preferita. La sua ultima opera teatrale fu una produzione nel West End di M. Butterfly nel 1989. Nel 1968, Hopkins ottenne riconoscimenti nel cinema, interpretando Riccardo Cuor di Leone in The Lion in Winter. A metà degli anni '70, Richard Attenborough, che aveva diretto cinque film di Hopkins, lo definì "il più grande attore della sua generazione." Nel 1991 interpretò Hannibal Lecter nel film horror psicologico Il silenzio degli innocenti, vincendo l'Oscar come miglior attore. Ha ripreso il ruolo nel suo seguito Hannibal e nel prequel Red Dragon. Ha ricevuto altre quattro nomination agli Academy Awards per The Remains of the Day (1993), Nixon (1995), Amistad (1997) e The Two Popes (2019) prima di vincere un quarto BAFTA Award e un secondo Oscar come Miglior Attore per il suo ruolo di un uomo anziano diagnosticato con demenza in The Father (2020), diventando il vincitore più anziano dell'Oscar come Miglior Attore fino ad oggi. Da quando ha debuttato in televisione con la BBC nel 1967, Hopkins ha continuato ad apparire in televisione. Nel 1973 ricevette un British Academy Television Award come miglior attore per la sua interpretazione in Guerra e pace. Nel 2015 ha recitato nel film della BBC The Dresser insieme a Ian McKellen. Nel 2018 ha recitato in Re Lear al fianco di Emma Thompson. Nel 2016 e 2018 ha recitato nella serie televisiva HBO Westworld, per la quale ha ricevuto una nomination ai Primetime Emmy Award.
