Walter Matthau (nato Walter John Matthow; 1 ottobre 1920 – 1 luglio 2000) è stato un attore, comico e regista cinematografico americano. È noto soprattutto per i suoi ruoli cinematografici in A Face in the Crowd (1957), King Creole (1958) e come allenatore di una sfortunata squadra di little league nella commedia di baseball The Bad News Bears (1976). Recitò anche in 10 film accanto a Jack Lemmon, tra cui The Odd Couple (1968), The Front Page (1974) e Grumpy Old Men (1993). Matthau vinse l'Oscar come miglior attore non protagonista per la sua interpretazione nel film di Billy Wilder The Fortune Cookie (1966). Matthau è anche noto per le sue interpretazioni nel romance romantico Charade (1963) di Stanley Donen, nel musical di Gene Kelly Hello, Dolly! (1969), la commedia screwball di Elaine May A New Leaf (1971) e la commedia corale California Suite di Herbert Ross (1978). Ha anche recitato in Plaza Suite, Kotch (entrambi nel 1971), Charley Varrick (1973), The Sunshine Boys (1975) e Hopscotch (1980).
