Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch (nato il 19 luglio 1976 a Londra, in Inghilterra) è un attore britannico, noto per le sue interpretazioni nel cinema, in televisione e a teatro. Figlio degli attori Timothy Carlton e Wanda Ventham, ha studiato recitazione alla London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, iniziando successivamente una carriera teatrale prima di affermarsi sul piccolo e grande schermo. Ha raggiunto la notorietà internazionale interpretando Sherlock Holmes nella serie televisiva britannica Sherlock (2010-2017), ruolo che gli ha portato numerosi riconoscimenti e una candidatura ai Primetime Emmy Awards. La sua carriera cinematografica si è sviluppata parallelamente con ruoli in produzioni come Espiazione (2007), La talpa (2011), War Horse (2011), Star Trek - Into Darkness (2013) e 12 anni schiavo (2013). Nel 2014 ha interpretato il matematico e crittoanalista Alan Turing nel film The Imitation Game, ricevendo una candidatura all'Oscar come miglior attore.
