Ha recitato ruoli di supporto in film come Dune (1984), Paris, Texas (1984), To Live and Die in L.A. (1985), Blue Velvet (1986), Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) e Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988). Ricevette ulteriori elogi dalla critica per la sua interpretazione in Married to the Mob (1988), per il quale fu nominato all'Oscar come miglior attore non protagonista. Successivamente ha avuto ruoli in The Player (1992), Air Force One (1997), The Rainmaker (1997) e The Manchurian Candidate (2004).
