Het verhaal volgt de innovatieve manager van een honkbalteam Branch Rickey. Als kaderlid van de Major League Baseball organisatie veroorzaakte hij een grote controverse bij die organisatie, door de Afro-Amerikaanse Jackie Robinson aan te stellen bij de Brooklyn Dodgers. Niet alleen was dit de eerste stap naar een legendarische carrière, maar ook werd Robinsons aanwezigheid in de prestigieuze MLB competitie als een doorbraak gezien in de honkbalwereld zelf.
