Rome staat op het punt veroverd te worden door Hannibal. Terwijl de heerser van Rome, Fabius Maximus, een verdediging beraamt tegen de legers van Hannibal, is Fabius" verloofde, Amytis, nieuwsgierig naar de onverschrokken veroveraar. Amytis reist naar het kamp van Hannibal om hem te bekijken, maar ze wordt uiteindelijk gevangengenomen. Ze is echter meteen verliefd op de Carthaagse commandant, dus probeert ze zijn aandacht af te leiden van Rome - en in plaats daarvan naar haar.
