Matt, Jack en Leroy zijn drie Californische boezemvrienden, voor altijd verbonden door hun passie voor de surfsport. Maar Big Wednesday is niet alleen een spectaculaire sportfilm over de ultieme uitdaging voor elke beach boy: surfen op huizenhoge golven. Het is ook een fascinerende kroniek van de tumultueuze periode 1962-1974. Jaren waarin de drie opgroeiende tieners langzaam maar zeker geconfronteerd worden met de realiteit ' Viëtnam, rassenrellen, sociale onrust ' en met hun eigen, vaak pijnlijke volwassenwording.
