Cielo sulla palude (1949)
In tegenstelling tot de meeste Italiaanse films uit de jaren 40, ging Augusto Genina's Cielo Sulla Palude in première in Venetië in plaats van Rome. De Amerikaanse titel van de film was Heaven Over the Marshes, en inderdaad speelt het grootste deel van het verhaal zich af in de door ziekte geteisterde Pontijnse moerassen aan de rand van Rome. Dit was de woonplaats van Maria Goretti, een vroom jong meisje dat werd vermoord door haar potentiële verleider. Om redenen die in de loop van de film duidelijk worden, maakte Maria's korte leven op aarde haar heilig, wat haar kort na de release van deze film ook daadwerkelijk werd toegekend. Maria Goretti wordt uitstekend vertolkt door Inés Orsini. Cielo Sulla Palude betekende de comeback voor regisseur Augusto Genina, wiens eerdere pro-fascistische films hem na de Tweede Wereldoorlog op de zwarte lijst hadden doen belanden.
