Heaven & Earth (1993)
Le Ly woont in een Vietnamees dorp dat afwisselend het bezoek krijgt van de Vietcong en van Amerikaanse en Zuid-Vietnamese adviseurs. De Zuid-Vietnamezen martelen haar en de Vietcongpropagandisten verkrachten haar. Op een dag vlucht Le Ly, samen met haar moeder naar Saigon. Daar wordt zij zwanger van een rijke man, die haar vervolgens in de steek laat waardoor ze, om te kunnen overleven, moet gaan bedelen en in de prostitutie terechtkomt. Als tippelaarster ontmoet ze de Amerikaan Steve Butler die haar niet als prostituee maar als vrouw aan zijn zijde wenst te hebben. Hij is goedaardig, begripvol, volhardend, maar in haar wanhopige situatie dringt de betekenis van zijn uitspraak 'Ik wil een Aziatische vrouw', niet tot haar door.
