Michael Chamberlain is dominee van de kerk der Zevende-dags Adventisten. Samen met zijn vrouw Linda en hun kinderen, de 4-jarige Aidan, de 6-jarige Reagan en hun nog erg jonge baby Azaria, gaan zij een weekje op vakantie. Ze kamperen nabij de Ayer’s Rock, een indrukwekkend grote rotsformatie in Australië. Op een avond ziet Linda een dingo (wilde Australische hond) uit de tent van hun kinderen komen. Direct daarna ontdekt zij dat Azaria spoorloos is verdwenen, waarbij ze ervan overtuigd is dat de dingo de baby heeft meegenomen. Er volgt een grootscheepse zoektocht.
