Annie Higgins, is IRA-activiste, Kathleen Quigley verafschuwt geweld en wil niets met de IRA te maken hebben. Aanvankelijk staan de twee tegenover elkaar, maar als hun zoons in hongerstaking gaan schept dat een band en moet Kathleen haar felle anti-IRA-mening bijstellen.
