Een trein met aan boord medische middelen en een kleine U.S. Army unit reizen door de Rocky Mountains richting Fort Humboldt, waar een ernstige ziekte zich verspreidt. Onder de passagiers zijn de gouverneur, een priester, een dokter en een paar U.S. Marshals, met hun gevangene John Deakin. Plotseling wordt er iemand vermoord. Deakin weet te ontsnappen en gaat op onderzoek uit, op zoek naar de reden van de moord.
