Het verhaal van de film draait om de complexe relatie van Karin Stolpe met haar man Sven Stolpe en haar hartstochtelijke liefdesrelatie met Olof Lagercrantz die begint in de jaren dertig. Het toont de impact van passie, jaloezie en woede over een periode van zeventig jaar, waarbij verschillende generaties betrokken zijn.
