Viola Davis (/vaɪˈoʊlə/ vy-OH-lə; geboren 11 augustus 1965) is een Amerikaanse actrice en filmproducente. Ze heeft onder andere de Triple Crown of Acting en de EGOT (Employee, George, Tony Award) gewonnen. Time Magazine noemde haar in 2012 en 2017 een van de 100 meest invloedrijke mensen ter wereld. The New York Times plaatste haar op de negende plaats in de lijst van de grootste acteurs van de 21e eeuw (2020). Davis ontving in 2025 de Cecil B. DeMille Award. Davis studeerde af aan Juilliard en begon haar carrière in Central Falls, Rhode Island, met rollen in kleine theaterproducties. Ze maakte haar Broadway-debuut in het stuk Seven Guitars (1996) van August Wilson, waarvoor ze haar eerste Tony-nominatie ontving. Later zou ze twee Tony Awards winnen, beide voor stukken van Wilson. Haar eerste Oscar won ze voor Beste Bijrolactrice in een toneelstuk voor haar vertolking van Tonya, een vrouw die worstelt met trauma en verlies in King Hedley II (2001). Haar tweede Oscar won ze voor Beste Actrice in een toneelstuk voor haar rol als Rose Maxson, een moeder uit de arbeidersklasse in Fences (2010). Ze won de Academy Award voor Beste Bijrolactrice voor haar rol in de verfilming van Fences uit 2016. Ze werd genomineerd voor een Oscar voor haar vertolking van een complexe moeder in Doubt (2008), een dienstmeisje uit de jaren 60 in The Help (2011) en Ma Rainey in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020). Op televisie werd ze de eerste zwarte actrice die de Primetime Emmy Award won voor Beste Hoofdrolactrice in een Dramaserie voor haar rol als advocate Annalise Keating in de ABC-dramaserie How to Get Away with Murder (2014-2020). Davis sloot zich aan bij het DCEU als Amanda Waller vanaf Suicide Squad (2016). Ze speelde ook een rol in het misdaaddrama Widows (2018) en de historische actiefilm The Woman King (2022). Davis en haar echtgenoot zijn oprichters van het productiebedrijf JuVee Productions, en ze staat ook bekend om haar inzet voor en steun aan mensenrechten en vrouwen van kleur. In 2019 werd ze ambassadeur van L'Oréal Paris. De audioboekversie van haar memoires Finding Me uit 2022 leverde haar de Grammy Award op voor Beste Audioboek, Vertelling & Vertelling.
