Telly Paretta wird 14 Monate nachdem ihr neunjähriger Sohn Sam bei einem Flugzeugabsturz ums Leben kam immer noch von den Erinnerungen gequält, in deren Folge sie sich von ihrem Mann Jim immer mehr entfremdet hat. Ihr Psychiater Dr. Munce versucht derweil, ihr glaubhaft zu machen, dass sie an Wahnvorstellungen leide: Ihr Sohn hätte nie existiert! Telly versucht verzweifelt und erfolglos, Beweise für Sams Existenz zu finden. Dann lernt sie Ash Correl kennen, den Vater eines anderen Opfers des Flugzeugabsturzes, mit dem sie fortan einen Verbündeten im Kampf um die Wahrheit an ihrer Seite hat.
