Als der brillante Trickbetrüger Jake Vig den scheinbar harmlosen Lionel Dolby um einige Tausend Dollar betrügt, hat er keine Ahnung, was er damit lostritt. Dolby arbeitet nämlich als Buchhalter für den Gangsterboss Winston King, und der will das Geld schleunigst zurück haben. Andernfalls sähe es für Jake und seine Gang schlecht aus. Zusammen mit der Taschendiebin Lily und seinen Kumpanen sowie zwei korrupten Polizisten fädelt er den größten Betrug seiner Karriere ein. Doch der Coup steht von Anfang an unter einem schlechten Stern: Jake und Co. müssen sowohl Kings Leuten als auch der Polizei immer einen Schritt voraus sein. Nur so könnte es ihnen tatsächlich gelingen, ihre Schulden zu begleichen und damit ihr Leben zu retten.
