Paul Edward Valentine Giamatti (* 6. Juni 1967 in New Haven, Connecticut) ist ein US-amerikanischer Schauspieler. Er ist mehrfacher Golden-Globe- und Emmy-Preisträger. Seine erste bekannte Rolle spielte er in der Filmadaption von Howard Sterns Autobiografie Private Parts, in der Giamatti den unsympathischen Programmchef Kenny Rushton spielte. Der Radiomoderator Stern lobte Giamattis Darstellung und forderte vergebens eine Oscar-Nominierung in der Kategorie Bester Nebendarsteller. Zuvor hatten Giamattis Rollen in Filmen wie Donnie Brasco oder Geliebte Aphrodite noch nicht einmal Namen gehabt. In der Folgezeit war er zunächst in kleineren Rollen in einigen großen Filmen wie Die Truman Show, Der Soldat James Ryan und Verhandlungssache zu sehen. Seinen Durchbruch erzielte er 1999 in dem Biopic Der Mondmann über das Leben des Komikers Andy Kaufman. Seine Filmauswahl umfasst neben Mainstream-Filmen wie Die Hochzeit meines besten Freundes, Big Mamas Haus, Planet der Affen und Paycheck – Die Abrechnung immer wieder hochgelobte Independent-Filme wie Women Love Women, Traumpaare und Storytelling. Mit American Splendor über den Comicautor Harvey Pekar etablierte er sich als Hauptdarsteller und konnte viele Auszeichnungen für Filme wie Sideways und Das Comeback gewinnen. Für letzteren Film erhielt er 2006 sowohl eine Golden Globe Award wie Oscar- Nominierung und wurde von der Amerikanischen Schauspielgilde als bester Nebendarsteller ausgezeichnet. 2006 war er als Hauptdarsteller in M. Night Shyamalans Das Mädchen aus dem Wasser als Hausmeister und neben Edward Norton und Jessica Biel in The Illusionist als Inspektor zu sehen. Letzterer Film kam im deutschsprachigen Raum allerdings nie in die Kinos. 2008 kam sein größter Erfolg mit der Serie John Adams. Für seine Rolle erhielt er ebenso einen Golden Globe und zahlreiche andere Auszeichnungen. John Adams gilt als eine seiner besten Darstellungen. 2010 war Giamatti in der Komödie Barney’s Version in der Titelrolle des Barney Panofsky, ein Produzent seichter Fernsehserien, der sein bewegtes Leben Revue passieren lässt. Seine Darstellung brachte ihm 2011 erneut den Golden Globe, diesmal als bester Hauptdarsteller in einer Komödie oder Musical ein. 2012 arbeitete er als Voice-Actor in der Comicverfilmung von The Goon. Im Jahre 2015 verkörperte Giamatti in dem Musikfilm Straight Outta Compton den weißhäutigen Manager Jerry Heller.
