Schuldig oder nicht? ... David Gale ist ein fürsorglicher Vater, angesehener Professor und vehementer Gegner der Todesstrafe. Umso härter spielt ihm das Schicksal mit, als er für den Tod seiner Mitstreiterin Constance Harraway verantwortlich sein soll und deshalb selbst zum Tode verurteilt wird. Kurz vor der Hinrichtung bekommt die Journalistin Bitsey Bloom die Chance für ein Exklusiv-Interview mit dem Todeskandidaten. Ziemlich schnell bemerkt sie bei ihren Recherchen, dass Gale fälschlicherweise des Verbrechens beschuldigt wird. Bevor es zu spät ist, beginnt für beide ein verzweifelter Wettlauf gegen die Zeit.
