Winnie Harold (Broderick Crawford) hält sich für den schnellsten Schützen des Westens und zieht durch die Lande, um diesen Ruf zu verteidigen. Eines Tages kommt er nach Cross Creek. Hier lebt ein gewisser George Temple (Glenn Ford), der ebenfalls als Glanzschütze gilt, aber den Colt nach einem dunklen Kapitel in der Vergangenheit für immer beiseite gelegt hat. Doch eines Tages behauptet er in nicht mehr ganz nüchternem Zustand, der schnellste Revolvermann zu sein - und wird daraufhin von Winnie herausgefordert...
