Ost-Texas, Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts: Die Schwester des Heranwachsende Jack wird von dem brutalen Killer Cut Throat Bill entführt. Jack ist fest entschlossen, sie zu retten, doch dafür braucht er Hilfe. Doch die einzigen, die bereit sind, ihn bei seinem Selbstmordkommando zu unterstützen, sind Shorty (Peter Dinklage), ein kleinwüchsiger Kopfgeldjäger, Eustace, ein dem Alkohol verfallener Sohn eines Sklaven und Jimmie Sue, eine gewitzte Prostituierte. Gemeinsam nimmt das Quartett die Verfolgung auf, die sie in eine Gegend führt, in der eine schwarze Flüssigkeit aus dem Boden sprudelt, die viele als das neue Gold betrachten: Öl.
