Das Mädchen Mary, das so unglücklich über seine roten Haare ist, folgt aus Neugier einem schwarzen Kater namens Tib in den Wald. Dieser führt sie zu einer seltsamen Blume. Ganz in der Nähe der Blume entdeckt Mary auch noch einen Besen. Ehe sie sich versieht, trägt dieser das überraschte Mädchen über die Wipfel der Bäume hinfort in die Wolken. Die Reise endet bei der Endor-Universität für Magie. Mary wird dort irrtümlich für eine neue Studentin gehalten. Die Leiterin der Universität glaubt - nicht zuletzt aufgrund von Marys prächtigen roten Haare - eine außergewöhnlich begabte Hexe vor sich zu haben. Anfangs ist Mary von dem, was sie sieht und erlebt, fasziniert. Doch schon bald kommt sie den dunklen Machenschaften der Universtätslehrer auf die Schliche …
