Mehrere wichtige Glücksspieler sind nach New York gekommen, wo Nathan Detroit eine große Veranstaltung organisieren soll. Leider hat der nicht nur seiner Verlobten Adelaide versprochen, dass er das Glücksspiel aufgeben wird, sondern es fehlt ihm vor allem das nötige Kleingeld, um einen adäquaten Ort mieten zu können. Die rettende Idee soll eine Wette sein, die er dem Spieler Sky Masterson anbietet: Nathan setzt 1000 Dollar darauf, dass es Sky nicht gelingen wird, die lokale Missionarin Sarah von der Heilsarmee zu verführen.
