Ein professioneller Killer namens John Gant (Audie Murphy) taucht in Lordsburg auf und macht gleich klar, was er will: Einer der Bewohner der Stadt wird durch seine Kugel sterben. Es ist die Rache für ein vergangenes Verbrechen. Unter der Bevölkerung bricht Panik aus, denn die meisten tragen ein düsteres Geheimnis mit sich. Paranoia und gegenseitige Schuldzuweisungen vergiften die Atmosphäre in der Stadt. Nur der Arzt Luke Canfield (Charles Drake) will die Bedrohung durch den Mörder nicht hinnehmen. Doch die Frage bleibt: Auf wen hat es der Gunman abgesehen?
