Wenn das Fest beginnt... (1975)
Frankreich im Jahre 1719: Vier Jahre nach dem Tod Ludwigs XIV. regiert Philippe II., Herzog von Orléans, für den minderjährigen Ludwig XV. Der Regent kennt keine Tabus, sein Leben ist ganz auf die leiblichen Sinnenfreuden ausgerichtet. Dabei ist er ein luzider Geist, liberal und reformbereit. Das verachtenswerte höfische System der gegenseitigen Vorteilsnahme und Bereicherung durchschaut er perfekt – ändert aber nichts. Stattdessen überlässt er das Regieren dem machtgierigen Abbé Dubois, der sich in den Kopf gesetzt hat, das Amt des Erzbischofs zu übernehmen. Die beiden Zyniker verbindet eine tiefe Hassliebe, ihre Wortgefechte sind an Treffsicherheit und Sarkasmus kaum zu überbieten. Während man am Hof mit sich selbst beschäftigt ist – mit dem nächsten amourösen Stelldichein, dem nächsten Maskenfest, der nächsten Orgie – und alles beim Alten belässt, gerät die Außenwelt langsam aus den Fugen: Amerika formiert sich zur neuen politischen Macht.
