Ein junges Mädchen nimmt in einer U-Bahn-Station den Hörer eines ständig klingelnden Telefons ab. Wie vom Blitz getroffen bricht sie tot zusammen. Die Gerichtsmediziner stellen als Todesursache Herzversagen fest, doch Nat Bridger, der frühere Lehrer des Mädchens, glaubt nicht an diese These. Während seiner Nachforschungen geschehen weitere mysteriöse Morde in verschiedenen Stadtteilen - und alle werden durch das Klingeln des Telefons eingeleitet... Nat nimmt den Wettlauf mit der Zeit auf und versucht unter Lebensgefahr dem geheimnisvollen Telefonmörder auf die Spur zu kommen.
