Barbara Hale war eine US-amerikanische Schauspielerin, die vor allem für ihre Rolle als Anwaltsgehilfin Della Street in über 250 Folgen der langjährigen Fernsehserie „Perry Mason“ und in 30 Fernsehfilmen bekannt ist. Hale wurde in DeKalb, Illinois, als Tochter des Landschaftsgärtners Luther Ezra Hale und seiner Frau Wilma Colvin geboren. Sie hatte schottisch-irische Vorfahren. Nach ihrem Highschool-Abschluss in Rockford, Illinois, besuchte Hale die Chicago Academy of Fine Arts mit dem Ziel, Künstlerin zu werden. Ihre Schauspielkarriere begann in Chicago, wo sie als Model arbeitete, um ihr Studium zu finanzieren. 1943 zog sie nach Hollywood und hatte ihre ersten Filmauftritte in kleineren Rollen (oft ohne Nennung im Abspann). Hale stand bis Ende der 1940er-Jahre bei RKO Radio Pictures unter Vertrag. Sie spielte 1943 an der Seite von Frank Sinatra in „Higher and Higher“. Sie spielte die weibliche Hauptrolle an der Seite von Robert Mitchum in „West of the Pecos“ (1945); hatte die Hauptrolle sowohl in „Lady Luck“ (1946) neben Robert Young als auch in „The Window“ (1949) mit Arthur Kennedy; und spielte eine Nebenrolle in „Jolson Sings Again“ (1949), in dem Larry Parks Al Jolson und Hale Jolsons Ehefrau Ellen Clark verkörperten. Sie spielte die Titelrolle in „Lorna Doone“ (1951) und verkörperte Julia Hancock in „The Far Horizons“ (1955) mit Fred MacMurray und Charlton Heston. Ihre erfolgreiche Filmkarriere endete im Wesentlichen, als Hale ihre bekannteste Rolle als Della Street, Sekretärin des Anwalts Perry Mason, in der Fernsehserie mit Raymond Burr annahm. Die Serie lief von 1957 bis 1966, und sie verkörperte die Rolle in mehreren Fernsehfilmen. Ihr letzter Auftritt war im Jahr 2000 im Alter von 78 Jahren. 1967 hatte sie einen Gastauftritt in der ABC-Serie „Custer“. Hale spielte außerdem 1970 eine wichtige Rolle in dem Ensemblefilm „Airport“ als Ehefrau des Linienpiloten Vernon Demerest, gespielt von Dean Martin.
