Ein amerikanischer Filmregisseur, Drehbuchautor, Produzent, Cutter, Komponist und gelegentlicher Schauspieler. Obwohl Carpenter in seiner vier Jahrzehnte währenden Karriere in zahlreichen Filmgenres tätig war, wird sein Name am häufigsten mit Horror und Science-Fiction in Verbindung gebracht. Die meisten Filme in Carpenters Karriere waren zunächst kommerzielle und kritische Misserfolge, mit den bemerkenswerten Ausnahmen von Halloween (1978), The Fog (1980), Escape from New York (1981) und Starman (1984). Viele von Carpenters Filmen aus den 1970er und 1980er Jahren gelten jedoch heute als Kultklassiker, und er ist als einflussreicher Filmemacher anerkannt. Zu den Kultklassikern, bei denen Carpenter Regie führte, gehören: Dark Star (1974), Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), The Thing (1982), Christine (1983), Big Trouble in Little China (1986), Prince of Darkness (1987), They Live (1988) und In the Mouth of Madness (1995). Seine Filme zeichnen sich durch minimalistische Beleuchtung und Fotografie, statische Kameras, den Einsatz von Steadicams und eine unverwechselbare, synthetische Filmmusik aus.
