Biografie:

Aufgewachsen in New Jersey und New York, stammt Overton aus einer Musikerfamilie. Sein Vater, Hal Overton, war Arrangeur der Big Band von Thelonious Monk und unterrichtete Musik am Juilliard Institute. Seine Mutter, Nancy Overton (auch bekannt als Anne Swain Overton), trat als Mitglied der Chordettes, der Girlgroup, die vor allem für ihre Singles „Lollipop“ und „Mr. Sandman“ bekannt ist, bei Soloauftritten auf. Auch Rick hat sich in der Musikbranche versucht und spielt gelegentlich Mundharmonika in lokalen Bluesbands. Seine Karriere als Stand-up-Comedian begann er bereits in der High School als Teil des Comedy-Duos „Overton & Sullivan“, bevor er Anfang der 1970er-Jahre mit seinem Debüt im New York Improvisation Club solo durchstartete.
