Rock Hudson, eigentlich Roy Harold Scherer Jr., war ein US-amerikanischer Schauspieler. Er sorgte 1985 zusammen mit dem jungen Aktivisten Ryan White für die Vervielfachung der US-amerikanischen AIDS-Berichterstattung. Er starb als einer der ersten Prominenten an den Folgen der Krankheit. 1948 erhielt er seine erste Rolle in dem Kriegsfilm Fighter Squadron, wurde aber im Vor- und Abspann nicht erwähnt. Nach diesem ersten Auftritt in einem Hollywood-Film wurden die Universal Picture Studios auf Hudson aufmerksam und nahmen ihn unter Vertrag. Da Hudson eine sportlich muskulöse Statur besaß, wurde er vor allem in Western der 1950er Jahre besetzt, so an der Seite von James Stewart in Winchester ’73. Hudson war in den 1950er und 1960er Jahren Hauptdarsteller in vielen Filmen. Seine Rollen waren vorwiegend die des smarten Liebhabers, Frauenhelden und Ehemannes. Nach den Western waren es zuerst Melodramen, mehrfach unter der Regie von Douglas Sirk. Einer seiner bekanntesten Filme war Giganten unter der Regie von George Stevens mit Elizabeth Taylor und James Dean. Ab 1959 spielte er in Komödien an der Seite von Doris Day in Bettgeflüster (1959, für dessen Soundtrack er auch sang), Ein Pyjama für zwei (1961) und Schick mir keine Blumen (1964). Einen weiteren Erfolg in dieser Sparte hatte er gemeinsam mit Paula Prentiss in Ein Goldfisch an der Leine (1964). Jedoch konnte Hudson in den nächsten Jahren nicht wieder an diese Erfolge anknüpfen. In den 1970er Jahren wirkte er noch in einigen Film-Produktionen und US-Fernsehserien mit; so im dystopischen Science-Fiction-Film Der Mann, der zweimal lebte und in der Detektivserie McMillan & Wife sowie 1980 im Spielfilm Mord im Spiegel nach einer Romanvorlage von Agatha Christie, in dem Hudson mit Tony Curtis und Elizabeth Taylor auftrat.
