Ewan McGregor ist ein schottischer Schauspieler, der sich sowohl im Independent-, als auch im Mainstream-Kino einen Namen gemacht hat. Sein Kinodurchbruch gelang ihm in der Rolle des Junkies Mark Renton in Trainspotting – Neue Helden. Nachdem er seine Schullaufbahn beendet hatte, heuerte Ewan McGregor beim Perth Repertory Theater an. Anschließend studierte er Schauspiel an der Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Er verließ die Schule jedoch kurz vor seinem Abschluß, um eine Rolle in Dennis Potters TV-Produktion Lipstick on your Collar anzunehmen. 1994 arbeitete Ewan McGregor in Kleine Morde unter Freunden zum ersten Mal mit dem Regisseur Danny Boyle zusammen, mit dem er 1996 schließlich Trainspotting – Neue Helden drehte. Trainspotting gehört zu den wichtigsten Filme des Jahres 1996, und machte Ewan McGregor auf einen Schlag bekannt. Nach mehreren Independent-Produktionen unternahm Ewan McGreogor im Jahr 1999 seinen bisher kommerziell erfolgreichsten Ausflug ins Mainstream-Fach, als er die Rolle des Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode I – Die dunkle Bedrohung annahm und diese auch in den nachfolgenden Episoden Star Wars: Episode II – Angriff der Klonkrieger und Star Wars: Episode III – Die Rache der Sith spielte. An der Seite von Nicole Kidman war Ewan McGregor im Jahre 2001 in Baz Luhrmanns Musical-Film Moulin Rouge zu sehen. Dort verkörperte er einen mittellosen Autor, der sich in eine stadtbekannte Kurtisane verliebt. Noch im selben Jahr war er in Ridley Scotts Kriegsfilm Black Hawk Down zu sehen und musste sich mit einer Gruppe von US-Spezialkräften durch die Straßen der somalischen Hauptstadt Mogadischu kämpfen. Der Theaterbühne hatte Ewan McGregor nie ganz den Rücken gekehrt. Vom 20. Mai bis zum 3. Dezember 2005 stand er als Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls auf der Bühne des Londoner Piccadilly-Theaters und feierte dort große Erfolge. Er gewann unter anderem den wichtigen “What’s On Stage”-Award und wurde für einen Laurence Olivier-Award nominiert. Vom 30. November 2007 bis zum 23. Februar 2008 spielte Ewan McGregor die Rolle des Iago in einer Othello-Inszenierung am Donmar Warehouse in London. Im Frühjahr 2006 drehte Ewan McGregor zusammen mit Renée Zellweger in London den Film Miss Potter, in dem er Norman Warne verkörpert. Im Herbst des selben Jahres stand er gemeinsam mit Colin Farrell in Woody Allens Cassandras Traum vor der Kamera. 2009 spielte er, neben Tom Hanks und Armin Mueller-Stahl, in Illuminati von Ron Howard. Danach drehte Ewan McGregor unter der Regie von Atmeister Roman Polanski den Film Der Ghostwriter, der im Februar 2010 in die Kinos kam. Ewan McGregor ist verheiratet mit Eve Mavrakis, einer französischen Production Designerin und ist der Vater von Clara Mathilde und Esther Rose. Die beiden adoptierten auch ein 4-jähriges Mädchen aus der Mongolei, welches Ewan McGregor auf einer seiner zahlreichen Motorradreisen kennengelernt hat.
