Ronald Alfred Pickup war ein englischer Schauspieler. Er war in Film, Fernsehen und Theater tätig und begann seine Karriere 1964 mit einem Auftritt in „Doctor Who“. 1983 verkörperte Pickup Friedrich Nietzsche in Wagners gleichnamiger Operette; Wagner existiert in mehreren Fassungen und wurde auch verfilmt. Im darauffolgenden Jahr spielte Pickup Jan Tyranowski in dem Fernsehfilm „Papst Johannes Paul II. – Sein Weg nach Rom“ und Albert Einstein in der gleichnamigen Fernseh-Miniserie. Im Kino war Pickup 1973 als Fälscher in „Der Schakal“ zu sehen, im Jahr darauf wirkte er in Ken Russells Film „Mahler“ mit und spielte 1977 in „Joseph Andrews“. In „Die 39 Stufen“ (1978) verkörperte Pickup einen der preußischen Agenten, die den Anschlag auf das Parlament planten. 1983 spielte Pickup einen Regierungsbeamten im James-Bond-Film „Sag niemals nie“. In „The Mission“ (1986) verkörperte er den portugiesischen Gouverneur Don Hontar. Internationale Bekanntheit erlangte Pickup durch seine Rolle als Junggeselle Norman Cousins in „The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel“ (2012). Er spielte diese Rolle auch in der Fortsetzung „The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel“ (2015). In dem Film „Darkest Hour“ (2017) verkörperte Pickup Premierminister Neville Chamberlain, der in den ersten Monaten des Zweiten Weltkriegs die Macht an Winston Churchill abgibt.
