Cynthia Ellen Nixon (* 9. April 1966) ist eine US-amerikanische Schauspielerin, Aktivistin und Theaterregisseurin. Für ihre Darstellung der Miranda Hobbes in der HBO-Serie „Sex and the City“ (1998–2004) gewann sie 2004 den Primetime Emmy Award als Beste Nebendarstellerin in einer Comedyserie. Sie verkörperte die Rolle erneut in den Filmen „Sex and the City“ (2008) und „Sex and the City 2“ (2010) sowie in der Fernsehserie „And Just Like That…“ (seit 2021). Zu ihren weiteren Filmen zählen „Amadeus“ (1984), „James White“ (2015) und die Rolle der Emily Dickinson in „A Quiet Passion“ (2016). Nixon gab ihr Broadway-Debüt 1980 in der Wiederaufnahme von „The Philadelphia Story“. Zu ihren weiteren Broadway-Engagements zählen „The Real Thing“ (1983), „Hurlyburly“ (1983), „Indiscretions“ (1995), „The Women“ (2001) und „Wit“ (2012). Sie gewann 2006 den Tony Award als Beste Hauptdarstellerin in einem Theaterstück für „Rabbit Hole“, 2008 den Primetime Emmy Award als Beste Gastdarstellerin in einer Dramaserie für „Law & Order: Special Victims Unit“, 2009 den Grammy Award für das Beste gesprochene Wort-Album für „Eine unbequeme Wahrheit“ und 2017 den Tony Award als Beste Nebendarstellerin in einem Theaterstück für „The Little Foxes“. Im Fernsehen verkörperte sie unter anderem die Politikerin Eleanor Roosevelt, Kade Prenall in der NBC-Serie „Hannibal Warm Springs“ (2005), Michele Davis in „Too Big to Fail“ (2011) und Nancy Reagan in dem Fernsehfilm „Killing Reagan“ (2016). 2020 war sie in der Netflix-Serie „Ratched“ zu sehen. Am 19. März 2018 gab Nixon ihre Kandidatur für das Amt des Gouverneurs von New York bekannt und trat gegen den demokratischen Amtsinhaber Andrew Cuomo an. Ihr Wahlprogramm konzentrierte sich auf die Bekämpfung der Einkommensungleichheit, erneuerbare Energien, die Einführung einer allgemeinen Gesundheitsversorgung, die Beendigung der Masseninhaftierung in den Vereinigten Staaten und den Schutz von Kindern ohne Aufenthaltsstatus vor Abschiebung. Sie unterlag Cuomo in der Vorwahl der Demokraten am 13. September 2018 mit 34 % der Stimmen (66 %). Nixon war als Kandidatin der Working Families Party für das Gouverneursamt nominiert worden; die Partei unterstützte jedoch Cuomo, nachdem Nixon die Vorwahl verloren hatte.
