Ian William Richardson CBE (* 7. April 1934 in Edinburgh; † 9. Februar 2007 in London) war ein britischer Schauspieler in Film, Fernsehen und Theater. Richardson studierte zunächst am College of Dramatic Art in Glasgow. In den 1960er-Jahren spielte er überwiegend im Ensemble der Royal Shakespeare Company, die er 1970 verließ, um die Hauptrolle in der BBC-Produktion Eyeless in Gaza zu übernehmen. 1979 spielte er den aristokratischen Chef des MI6, Sir Henry Cuthbertson, in dem Film Charlie Muffin an der Seite von David Hemmings und Pinkas Braun. Mitte der 1970er-Jahre war er als Henry Higgins in der Wiederaufnahme von My Fair Lady am Broadway zu sehen. Im Jahr 1983 spielte er den Detektiv Sherlock Holmes in den Filmen Im Zeichen der Vier und Der Hund von Baskerville. Einem breiteren Publikum bekannt wurde Richardson als perfider machiavellistischer Politiker Francis Urquhart in dem Fernsehmehrteiler Ein Kartenhaus (1990) und dessen Fortsetzungen Um Kopf und Krone (1993) und The Final Cut nach den Romanen von Michael Dobbs. Hierfür wurde Richardson 1991 von der British Academy of Film and Television Arts als bester Hauptdarsteller mit dem BAFTA TV Award ausgezeichnet. Im Juni 1989 wurde Ian Richardson zum Commander of the British Empire ernannt.
